Dr. Fernando Castro

Radiologist Fernando A. Castro, DVM, attended veterinary school at Federal University of Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

The native of Brazil made his career choice when his childhood dog, a terrier named Miguel, became ill. “I made a decision to become a veterinarian so that I could help alleviate the suffering of other people’s pets,” he says.

A member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association, the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, Dr. Castro says he finds being part of the medical team caring for patients, and helping clinicians with treatment decisions and case management, the most satisfying aspects of his job.

He and his wife, MLAH internist Dr. Victoria Byfield, DVM, enjoy riding their bikes along the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park trail, hiking, watching movies and meeting friends for dinner and conversation. They have two cats, Millie, an 8-year-old Siamese adopted in Philadelphia, and Oliver, a 3-year-old domestic short hair who came from a rescue in Long Island.
