A great man who was always kind, competent and compassionate. Started seeing him when we moved to NJ in’88. Once my appointment was delayed because he was chasing down an escaped cow! Also loved hearing him talk about his work with orangutans.
He was my first boss in vet med and made such an impact on me. He always looked out for us and made sure we were all ok, going out of his way to support us even beyond work. When I left MLAH to pursue a position at the Philly Zoo, he was the first person to visit me and show his support. He will always have a special spot in my heart, along with the jaguars he taught me so much about.
I think that I have read or been told that you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat animals. Dr. Sleeper was more than a Veteranarian, he was a caring person who loved animals and there owners. Rest in peace Dr. Sleeper and thank you and all who are part of your legacy at MLAH and for taking good care of our pets and families over the years.
My cat had been in labor for over 12 hours, I had her in and out of the vet, but she just wasn’t giving birth. I took her back to see the doctor and he and he gave her Pitocin and we took her home. 2 o’clock in the morning she still hadn’t given birth. We called Dr. Sleeper back. He said, bring her in and he did an emergency C-section and we had her fixed at the same time. He was the kindest gentlest doctor that I’ve ever had for my animals. He will be missed.
Dr. Sleeper performed surgery on my 1st cat, Priscilla’s eye in 2003. I was a brand-new pet owner, and he was amazing. Not only was he caring and kind, but he was extremely generous and only charged me for the medication because he knew I rescued Priscilla specifically because she had special needs. Rest in Peace, Dr. Sleeper. You have made the lives of so many pets and owners so much better because of your care.
Back in the early 80’s our aged Golden Retriever (Shannon) passed away during a very tough surgery. Dr. Sleeper took the time that morning to drive to our home in Moorestown to personally tell us the sad news. He was a great vet to all of our family dogs over the years. 40 years later Mt. Laurel Animal Hospital takes care of my Golden Retriever today. Dr. Sleeper leaves quite the legacy.
As we continue to help animals and families, I hope we can honor Dr. Sleeper’s memory. When Dr. Sleeper and Quasimoto would come into the hospital, they always brought a smile to all of our faces. Dr. Sleeper will continue to be an inspiration to those of us who have dedicated our lives to helping animals.
Dr. Sleeper took care of all of my pets, cats and dogs for many years until he retired. He also cared for my other family member’s many many pets. He was the most caring person and his love for animals was evident in every visit. I have missed him for a long time but he built a wonderful hospital and always made sure he had the most caring staff to carry on. His choice of Doctors to trust his patients and MLAH to also proves his dedication to love and perfection. RIP Dr Sleeper
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Edward Sleeper, the beloved founder of Mount Laurel Animal Hospital. He worked at Delaware Valley Animal Hospital after graduating from Penn Veterinary School in 1973. A year later, he opened his own animal hospital in the basement of his house in Moorestown, New Jersey. The hospital outgrew the space and he was able to purchase a 5 acre farm for expansion to Mount Laurel in 1976. He built a foundation of compassion and care that has allowed us to grow exponentially over the years. His passionate love for animals was evident in every aspect of his work, and his dedication to their well-being was unmatched. He is survived by his 2 daughters and 1 granddaughter.
Dr. Sleeper’s commitment to the community extended far beyond the walls of our hospital. He tirelessly advocated for animal welfare, providing not only medical care but also education and support to pet owners. He donated his services to care for injured wildlife and service animals, in particular guide dogs and police K9s. He also volunteered for several Earth Watch programs helping scientists gather data on endangered species to help with their conservation. He then shared his experiences by lecturing to school groups and local clubs. Dr. Sleeper’s legacy of kindness, empathy, and unwavering dedication will forever be etched in our hearts and in the lives of every patient we treat.
As we mourn this tremendous loss, we find solace in knowing that his spirit will live on through the compassion and care we continue to provide. Dr. Sleeper was not only a leader but also a mentor, friend, and family member to all of us at Mount Laurel Animal Hospital. His laughter, wisdom, and love for animals will be deeply missed.
In honor of his remarkable life and legacy, we are planning a memorial service in the spring. We invite everyone who knew and loved Dr. Sleeper to join us in celebrating his life and the incredible impact he had on our community. Please follow us for details as we finalize the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the "Edward M. Sleeper, VMD Working Dog Fund" at Mount Laurel Animal Hospital.
Thank you, Dr. Sleeper, for everything. Your love for animals and your dedication to our community will never be forgotten.
