Dr. Leslie James-Brown

Dr. Leslie James-Brown grew up in Philadelphia, PA, and earned her Bachelors of Science in Animal Science from West Virginia University in 1993. She then went on to continue her studies at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine/University of Illinois. Dr. James-Brown began practicing in Brooklyn, NY after graduating as a small animal veterinarian and has worked in a number of different types of practices, including service as Head Veterinarian at both the Philadelphia SPCA and Philadelphia Animal Control. She then became Medical Director of Simmons Animal Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. She is also a proud member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

When Dr. James-Brown was about 12 years old, she had a 6 month puppy named "Pentor". One afternoon her mother noticed there was a safety pin lodged in the roof of her mouth. She quickly took action! She opened her mouth and successfully dislodged the pin from her mouth. She was inspired from that point on! Dr. James-Brown was sure that she wanted to spend her life doing this work. But even before this, she spent a lot of time observing wildlife in zoos, television, and especially the wildlife outside our own back door (ie. Birds, squirrels,  rabbits, reptiles and even ants) although she is not a big fan of bugs!

Dr. James-Brown say the most satisfying part of being a veterinarian is, “having animals as patients has enhanced my understanding and perception of their behavior. When I can help my patients make a remarkable recovery, I am happy that I had a part in this process. Every shift is an opportunity to learn something new.”

Her hobbies include: singing, crochet and watching a good scary movie. She says she is also addicted to the ID channel, and makes it a priority to exercise regularly and meditate. She has a professional interest in soft tissue surgery as well.

Dr. James-Brown lives with her Bengal cat - Nala, Domestic Short Hair cat - Anabelle, 12 year old daughter Amaya, and self-employed, husband Bruce. Much of her free time is spent helping him with the running of his auto mechanic shop.
