Dr. Erika Sweigard

Dr. Sweigard joined the team at Mount Laurel Animal Hospital and 24 hour Emergency Service as a veterinarian in March 2015, but she's been drawn to animals and caring for them since her childhood. It's a talent that runs in the family; Dr. Sweigard's great grandfather was a veterinarian, just as she's become. In high school she followed the family example and began shadowing veterinarians; in college she worked during holidays and vacation at veterinary clinics.

She gained her undergraduate degree in Animal Science from The Pennsylvania State University, graduating in 2008. Dr. Sweigard went on to complete her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. Her professional interests are in the areas of surgery, oncology, and ruminant medicine and surgery.

"Being a veterinarian is incredibly satisfying because every day and every patient is different," Dr. Sweigard says. "This provides a challenge and makes getting to know and help individual animals and their owners that much more rewarding."

She'd found a calling for which she was passionate, and her early years provided lasting memories. She had the chance to travel abroad to Thailand, providing spay and neuter services alongside Thai vets for local communities. One holiday experience sticks with her even now.

"I will always remember my first Christmas on call," Dr. Sweigard remembers. "I was called out early in the morning to help deliver pot-bellied pig babies. The early morning call was worth all the happy piglet squeals."

At home Dr. Sweigard cares for two exceptionally pampered house cats, named Polly and Boo. In her free time she enjoys traveling, distance running, field hockey, and experiencing new restaurants with friends.
